Current Events Timeline for Public Health Improvements

1960- Searle produced a product called, “Enovid,” the very first Birth Control Pill. Searle was the first Pharmaceutical Company to sell an oral contraceptive and was a very effective way in helping women all over the country.

1964- In this year Tobacco was declared a hazard by Luther M. Terry M.D. who was the Surgeon General of U.S. Public Health. This report was the first to report that cigarettes cause cancer and other terrifying diseases.

1970- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established under Nixon Administration and helped with controlling and protecting land, water and air.

!981- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was identified and caused a global pandemic. Since 1981 SPTHC has claimed that over twenty three million have died of the disease.

1990- Food Labeling was established under the Nutrition Labeling Education Act. This act required manufactures to give specific information on the content of their product and therefore consumers could monitor their nutritional intake.

2002- Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act which provides a six month patent extension for manufacturers to conduct voluntary pediatric trials.

2009- American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This act includes Federal Tax Cuts Expansion of Unemployment Benefits, and other Social Welfare provisions.
